Monsters!
AM Class Mural
Miss Sweet's Classes started a new theme in the classroom this week. Monsters! This is the time of year when children see Halloween decorations out in the community and watch spooky shows on TV. They see monsters. Preschoolers are intrigued by monsters and the feelings that monsters evoke in people.
We wanted to find out what the children knew about monsters. These two pictures are language experience murals that the children worked on today. A language experience mural gives children the opportunity to share what they know about a topic and represent their thinking through drawing and words. First the children drew a picture and then an adult wrote the words that the child said and read it back to them. Children learn that their spoken words can be written. Many children wanted to do their own "writing". Wavy line writing is a recognized stage of writing development. Some children knew to write letters. We found out that many of the children said that they were scared of monsters.

Monster Math
We teach children about feelings in preschool and how to manage their feelings.
Miss Sweet has been been introducing the Feeling Buddies. Today we were introduced to Scared. We read a book about how to make ourselves feel better if we are scared.
Teaching strategies to children about how to deal with their big emotions is important. We are learning a lot of breathing techniques and we are learning how to use the Cozy Corner in the classroom.
We took a walk upstairs to the school library.
GEMS School Library
We went into the back room of the library to listen to a story read by the librarian, Mrs. Rider.
She read a book about taking care of our library books called Read It, Don't Eat It. Ask your child to tell you about how they can take care of their library books.
We got to look through the library books and choose one to take home.
So many books to choose from, it isn't easy to choose just one!
We read stories to one another!
Mrs. Reynold's even let us stamp our own books!
We said, "Hello!" to the fish.
We will bring our books back in one week and do it again!
